Sullivan Maritime Appoints Managing Director and New Director as Family Firm Marks 30 Years and Mourns Its Founder
Sons of late Ernest Sullivan promoted to top roles at the family shipping agency.
Sullivan Maritime has appointed Karl Sullivan, 34, as Managing Director, with his brother Nigel Sullivan, 36, joining the board as Commercial Director, the family-run firm announced on Wednesday.
The leadership transition comes as the company marks its 30th anniversary and continues to mourn the loss of its founder, Ernest Sullivan, who died in April at the age of 63.
Both brothers have held senior positions at the firm for several years. Karl, who formally steps into the Managing Director role this week, had previously served as a director at the firm, initially taking charge of day-to-day operations before taking on a wider role in shaping the company’s strategic direction. Nigel, meanwhile, has spent those years on the commercial side, building the client and carrier relationships he now takes formal responsibility for.

Sullivan Maritime is widely regarded as one of Malta’s leading shipping agencies. Founded three decades ago by the late Ernest Sullivan, the firm has remained family-run throughout, and today acts as the exclusive representative in Malta of the Italian carrier Grimaldi Lines, a partnership that now spans three generations of the Sullivan family, alongside a range of other shipping lines and agency services.
As Managing Director, Karl said his responsibility was to hold the company to the standards it was founded on, and to the people who had built it alongside his father.
”Our father's lesson was that a business is only ever as good as the care you put into it. The responsibility now is ours: to carry what our father built forward, guided by the same vision and the same principles, and to do it in a way that would have made him proud. His real legacy is the values he set and the team who kept them, many have been here for decades, some since day one. We work hand in hand with them, as a family company with an open door, and that is exactly how we intend to go on.

Nigel, who takes commercial responsibility for the agency’s lines and client relationships, added that the brothers hoped to honour their father’s legacy by growing other existing lines and exploring new ventures alongside the deepening partnership with Grimaldi.
”This is very much a third-generation relationship between Grimaldi and Sullivan Maritime and our first duty is to look after the relationships we already have, because they took decades to earn. From there we intend to grow our existing lines, deepen the partnerships we hold, and open new services where we can genuinely add something for Maltese trade.

The rest of the board remains in place, with directors Philip Sammut, Marco Spiteri Binett and Norman Aquilina and company secretary Jeanne Borg, all of whom have served alongside Ernest Sullivan for much of the company’s thirty years.
